Why hello.
At V13, Chris Gonda (our Founder, Publisher, & CEO, and my brother from another mother) has a saying: family first. I can’t tell you the amount of times that he’s had to tell me this. 13? 131? 1313 times? Probably more.
See the thing is, he lives by his values. And while I helped build out the full 13 V’s, those were all based on the foundational three he laid down when he did the full V-re-brand: VITA. VERITAS. VOX POPULI. Vita, the very first, is the most important: Life is the thing that defines each of our experiences, and should be treated with reverence.
So when I’m starting to get shitty about the fact I need to take care of a sick kid or be the one to take the car in or any other household task, he always reminds me, with the nudge of ‘family first’, that it’s actually keeping to our values for me to lay V13 stuff to the side and fulfil that duty.
Has it affected our bottom line? Of course.
Impacted our ability to create and fulfill obligations? Severely.
But that’s life. And the thing about this operation is, we’re trying to do things differently. And if we’re going to worship at the altar of profit as opposed to life, then we’re no better than the rest of the goofs out there.
We’re trying to do better; I’m trying to do better. I know you likely are too. Let’s do that together.
