This week I want to talk about the backup plan.
Not the one you hope you never need. The one that saves you when the real one falls apart.
My kid had surgery this week. The house was being painted. I had contracts to review, taxes to finish, a living room to rearrange, and a four-year-old who was doing his level best to test every last nerve I had left. Routines collapsed. The schedule I built to hold everything together quietly folded in on itself.
And I still wrote. Four out of five days.
Not the version I wanted. Not two hours of deep, unbroken focus in a perfectly quiet room. Ten minutes here. Forty-five minutes at 4 a.m. there. The squeezed-in, imperfect, "I'm proving I can do this even when it's ugly" version.
There's a line I keep coming back to: every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. Not every action you planned to take. Every action you actually take. The backup plan counts. The ten-minute version counts. The draft you wrote on your phone while your kid got his haircut counts.
Here's what I think most people get wrong about consistency: they think it means doing the ideal version every time. It doesn't. It means doing a version. Any version. The version that fits inside the chaos you didn't ask for.
The people who build something real aren't the ones who had perfect weeks. They're the ones who kept voting on the bad ones.
If you're in the middle of your version of this right now, protect the one thing that makes you feel like yourself. Scale it down to something so small it's almost embarrassing. Then do it anyway.
That vote still counts.
Let's get into it.
