Vita. Veritas. Vox Populi.

You can feel it when you start bargaining with your own life.

There’s a line. It’s thin, and at times grows taut with tension. There are the daily negotiations that look like you’re being responsible: I’ll cook less and buy the good, pre-made meals. I’ll dictate the journal instead of taking the time to write it. I’ll run the “ten-minute version” so the day still counts. I’ll agree to what the artist asks for so I can just move on.

None of this is wrong. It’s adaptation. It’s adulthood.

But there’s a danger to this. You can use it to stop fighting the wrong battles, or you can use it to stop fighting at all.

This week I watched myself straddling both sides.

I was trying to buy back time without buying garbage. I’m trying to keep the work moving without pretending I have the kind of schedule I had before kids, before errands, before the million tiny responsibilities that show up like debt collectors at my door.

But I’m also watching how quickly “I’m done fighting it” becomes “I’m done”.

That line is thin.

What helps is remembering: you need to know what you are refusing to let slide, even while everything else slides. Not the plan, or the aesthetic, or some niceties. I mean the key stuff, the most important stuff, the core.

Maybe that core is your writing. Maybe it’s your health. Maybe it’s the relationship you keep treating like wallpaper. Maybe it’s the one project that still feels like oxygen.

You can streamline dinners and still protect dinner. You can dictate instead of type and still protect the voice. You can simplify the release plan and still respect the song.

But the second you start adapting as a way to avoid commitment, the whole thing hollows out.

So the question I’ve been asking myself is simple: When you’re “done fighting it,” what are you actually letting go of?

Let's get into it.
