When we started, Ger told me that Wild Woman, her 2022 book, was not the book she had intended to write. Not fully.
I asked her if she would be interested in having a go at that.
I think it was the second session when I knew this was going to be a completely different book. She was divulging and sharing so much more and being so much more real.
She had unwittingly, I think, fallen prey to this thing that we do as writers who have an understanding of marketing and entrepreneurship: there is this desire to maintain a more filtered portrayal of ourselves. A few sessions into Chapter 1 blew all of that out of the water.
It isn't just straight memoir. It's a self-help book, a manifesto in many ways, and a memoir.
What's wild to me is that she's done all of this pretty well all by herself. I really was there to ask questions and take notes, but at the end of the day, it was her writing this. It was me just trying to keep up with and do right by her writing.
She finished an Executive MBA during the process, for God's sake. She made it happen, and I did not make it easy for her. I did not. I refused to let her off the hook ever.
It was a very long process. It always is with books, and that's how it should be. Frankly, we're all trying to make things happen so goddamn quickly. I refused to make that happen, and so did she.
V13 is supposed to be a voice for the voiceless. It is absolutely on the periphery. It is supposed to allow people who would never normally be treated with dignity by traditional publishers, labels, and outlets to actually be given the time of day and treated with respect.
Each person has their own level of fascinating, incredible stories and contributions, and those people keep on being ignored because they're not a sure thing. They're not a cow to be milked.
This is not a profit-making exercise. This is a labour of love, but publishing this means that we are who we say we are.
I know what it's like to be alone without anyone to care for you. Creatively speaking, I know how hard it is when you cannot find a single soul to read your work with a view to actually making it better and taking you seriously as a creative.
I really do think this is a new era for her. I'm really looking forward to you reading it.
